Russia's Rosneft Starts Drilling First Exploration Well In Amazon

MOSCOW, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Russian state oil firm Rosneft has started drilling its first exploration well in Brazil's Solimoes Basin since acquiring the interest, it said in a statement on Thursday.

Rosneft bought a controlling stake in the oil and gas project in the Amazon region from PetroRio in 2015, establishing it as an operator in Brazil.

"Rosneft Brasil is planning to drill at least four wells within the upcoming exploration drilling campaign with the scope of obtaining valuable geological information to determine the hydrocarbon resource potential of the Solimoes Basin," it said.

Rosneft said it plans to perform the drilling, testing and evaluation of the first well in the second quarter of this year.
