PSA Launches Investigation Into Scarabeo 5 Fire

The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) has launched an investigation into a fire which broke out in an engine room on the Scarabeo 5 drilling unit Nov. 22.

A team from the PSA will travel out to the rig, which is working on the Njord field in the Norwegian Sea, Nov. 24. It will also assist a police inquiry into the same incident. The goals of the PSA investigation include clarifying the course of events, and identifying the direct and underlying causes, in order to contribute to lessons learnt and experience transfer.

This investigation will result in a report to be published on the PSA website at ptil.no.

Scarabeo 5 is operated by Saipem Norwegian Branch. The operator on Njord is Statoil, which reported the fire on its website immediately.

The fire was brought under control within a few hours, according to Statoil, which stated that there were no reports of injuries among the 106 person crew.
