First Production Commences from Franklin Field

TotalFinaElf confirms the start-up of production from the Franklin field. Production from Franklin will add to that of the Elgin field, which came onstream in March this year.

The combined production of both the Elgin and Franklin fields will rapidly reach a plateau rate of 140,000 barrels of condensate per day (5.5% of UK production) and 13 million cubic meters of gas per day (4.5% of UK production), a combined total of 220,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Franklin is located 3.5 miles from the Elgin field, in water depths of 305 feet, around 150 miles east of Aberdeen in the Central Graben Area of the UK North Sea. Both Elgin and Franklin have their own dedicated normally unmanned wellhead platform with production being processed through one central facility a production/utilities/quarters (PUQ) platform, located close to Elgin.

Liquid condensate from the fields is transported to shore via the existing Forties Pipeline System and on to Kinneil for processing. Commercial quality gas is exported via the new SEAL (Shearwater Elgin Area Line) pipeline to the terminal at Bacton where it is tied into the Transco and Interconnector gas transmission systems for UK and Continental deliveries.

The ground-breaking Elgin/Franklin project carried out by TotalFinaElf, is the biggest development in the UK North Sea for more than two decades and the largest high temperature/high pressure (HP/HT) development in the world, incorporating leading edge technology to set new global industry standards. At 5,500 metres, the reservoirs are the deepest ever put into production in the North Sea, with temperatures of around 200 centigrade and pressures of 1,100 bars, beyond the range of classical industry tools.
