China Oilfield Services Ltd. (COSL) completed Tuesday a 3D seismic data acquisition over 2 blocks in north Barents Sea within the Arctic Circle, using its most advanced 12-streamer seismic vessel HYSY 720 for the 100-day operations, the company said in the press release.
The completion is a first for China oilfield services company in 3D seismic data acquisition in the North Pole and China, with a new monthly seismic data acquisition record of 702.93 square mile (1,820.58 square kilometer), also the highest in China.
The operation took place at a latitude of above 75 degrees -- or above latitude 70 degrees, a level which the insurance industry deemed to be high risk -- in hinterland, more than 559.2 miles (900 kilometers) above the Arctic Circle. The assignment is the first attempt by China in performing 3D seismic data collection in ultra-high latitude and ultra-low-temperature waters.
"We have no precedence to follow for this operation in North Pole. The low temperature operation, the persistent daylight and the narrow window that allowed operation to take place presented unprecedented challenges to team members and the exploration equipment," COSL's Operation Team Manager Chen Zhiwei said in the press release.
COSL said HYSY 720 is currently Asia's latest deepwater 3D seismic vessel and the first deepwater seismic vessel to be built in China.
The firm currently derives 40 percent of its revenue from overseas business. COSL plans to accelerate development of its capabilities and strengthen technology development in order to enhance its competitiveness in the global oil and gas exploration and development business.
