Explosion At Gas Plant in Mississippi, US
There has been an explosion at a gas plant located at 6800 Stennis Blvd in Mississippi, according to a statement on Facebook from the Pascagoula Police Department.
No injuries were reported as a result of the explosion and no evacuation procedures were underway, said Pascagoula Police. The explosion occurred at around 11:30pm local time, resulting in a fire which was contained, police said. Local TV reports showed substantial flames engulfing the plant, with large plumes of smoke rising from the facility, in the immediate aftermath of the explosion.
Several social media messages from Pascagoula residents initially suggested that the incident had taken place at Chevron Corp's 330,000 barrel per day refinery in Pascagoula. The police department, however, denied that the fire was at Chevron’s refinery and stated that the explosion had occurred at a plant owned by BP.
A BP spokesperson has since told Rigzone that the plant was actually operated by Enterprise, which took over the facility June 1.
The plant processes 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day from offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. It has been described as one of the ten largest facilities of its type in the United States.
