OTC 2016: Digital Maintenance Increases Safety, Attracts Younger Talent

Tablet-based inspection and maintenance software can increase staff safety and attract a new generation of workers to the oil and gas industry, according to SafeEx Business Development Director Jens Norgaard.

“The safety is improved because we know that a lot of the activities going on are not always recorded thoroughly and there’s a lot of handover of information between technicians to office staff that are entering the data into systems from the paper format into electronic systems,” Norgaard told Rigzone.

“It’s difficult to keep a good audit trail of what has happened … [Electronic systems provide] the certainty that things have been performed thoroughly, on-time, [which] reduces the risk of accidents happening offshore,” he added.

Norgaard also said digital inspection systems have the potential to attract the younger generation of talent to the oil and gas industry through the elimination of paper trails.

“There is no doubt that the younger generation…are running around with high tech equipment…and it’s much more sexy using an electronic tool than using pen and paper. Most technicians have taken a technical education because they want to use their hands and are not always very keen on doing administrative work. So if you can reduce the amount of that it will become much more attractive for younger people to do it,” Norgaard said.

Safex produces tablet-based inspection and maintenance software for the oil and gas industry, which traditionally conducts inspections with pen, paper checklists and printed diagrams.
