Total E&P Norge AS and Wintershall Norge AS have drilled dry wells in production license 554 and production license 611, respectively.
Wildcat well 34/6-4 in PL554, located northeast of the Garantiana discovery in the North Sea, was trying to prove the existence of petroleum in Lower Jurassic reservoir rocks in the Cook formation. The well encountered around 314 feet of aquiferous sandstone in the formation with poor to moderate reservoir quality and was subsequently classified as dry.
Drilled to a vertical depth of 13,398 feet below the sea surface using the Leiv Eriksson (UDW semisub), well 34/6-4 was terminated in the Lower Jurassic Burton formation.
Well 7224/2-1, drilled by Wintershall, had a primary exploration target to prove petroleum in Lower Triassic reservoir rocks, specifically, the Klappmyss formation. Its secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in the Snadd formation Upper Triassic reservoir rocks.
Situated northwest of the 7224/6-1 Arenaria gas discovery in the Barents Sea, the well did not encounter sandstones with reservoir quality in the Klappmyss formation, which did contain traces of petroleum. Wintershall found two sandstone layers in the well’s Snadd formation, with thicknesses of about 147 and 49 feet and with “very good” reservoir quality, according to a statement from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, although both layers were aquiferous.
Well 7224/2-1 also encountered traces of petroleum in two thin sandstone layers in the Kobbe formation and in two thin sandstone layers with poor reservoir quality in the Havert formation. Despite the finds, the well was classified as dry.
Wintershall drilled well 7224/2-1 to a vertical depth of 9,566 feet below the sea surface using the Transocean Arctic (mid-water semisub) and terminated drilling operations in the Havert formation of Early Triassic age.
Well 34/6-4, which was the fifth exploration well in PL554, and well 7224/2-1, which was the first exploration well in PL611, will both now be permanently plugged and abandoned.
