Light, 40-degree API, sweet oil has continued to flow naturally to surface at the Horse Hill-1 discovery in the UK’s Weald Basin, according to a statement from UKOG.
The oil, which originates from an 80-foot zone within the Lower Kimmeridge limestone interval at a depth of approximately 2,952 feet below ground level, flowed at a steady rate in excess of 456 barrels of per day over a further 9.5-hour period using a smaller 28/64-inch choke. The flow consisted of dry oil with zero water.
The continued oil flow follows news yesterday that a “significant” amount of oil had flowed to the surface at Horse Hill-1. An initial rate in excess of 700 barrels per day was reported at the site, using a one inch choke, in an approximate mix of 50:50 oil to water. The well was then choked back to 32/64 inches resulting in a steady early oil rate in excess of 463 barrels of oil per day over a further 7.3-hour period, in an approximate mix of over 99 percent oil and less than 1 percent water.
As previously announced, Phase 2 and Phase 3 operations at the site will move to the shallower Upper Kimmeridge limestone and Portland sandstone zones at approximately 2,755 feet and 2,017 feet below ground level, respectively, once the Lower Kimmeridge testing is completed.
Commenting on the continued oil flow, UKOG’s Executive Chairman Stephen Sanderson said in a company statement:
“The well continues to produce high quality oil at good rates. Although further work is required to be done, we are now beginning to establish the commerciality of the project earlier than originally anticipated. The first two tankers full with 348 barrels of oil were sent to be refined at noon yesterday.”
Solo's Chairman, Neil Ritson, also commented on the latest development at Horse Hill-1 in a company statement:
"The exciting initial flow rate of over 450 barrels of oil per day has been maintained for a second day which is further encouraging news from this well. Two further intervals are yet to be tested and we look forward to further news in the coming days."
In an independent report last year, Schlumberger calculated that 10.993 billion barrels of mean oil in place was imbedded within the 55 square miles of the PEDL137 and PEDL246 Horse Hill licenses. Schlumberger’s estimates build on the company’s previous petrophysical evaluation of the Horse Hill-1 well, located in PEDL137 near to London Gatwick Airport, which estimated the gross OIP for the Jurassic section of the UK’s HH-1 well to be approximately 271 million barrels of oil per square mile.
