Indonesia's Pertamina Opens New University in Jakarta

Indonesia's national oil company PT Pertamina opened its own university in the country's capital Jakarta Thursday, with the move providing a more diverse choice in higher education, local media Jakarta Globe reported Friday.

Pertamina University, the newly established tertiary institution, will be managed by Pertamina Foundation -- the state-owned firm's non profit arm that focuses on corporate social responsibility. Pertamina Foundation will manage the university and all its assets, including the campus, sporting facilities, a library and laboratories.

"Pertamina University will be a start for us to build competent individuals that are ready to compete in the ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] Economic Community era," Umar Fahmi, Pertamina Foundation executive director, said in a statement, as quoted by Jakarta Globe.

He added that Pertamina Foudation will set aside $50 million (IDR 680 billion) over the next five years to develop Pertamina University, with $5.9 million (IDR 80 billion) budgeted for the current year.

The university, located in Simprug, South Jakarta, offers 15 undergraduate programs across six faculties, including exploration technology, industry technology, economics and business, infrastructure planning, science and communication as well as diplomacy.

"We've targeted to open five graduate programs in 2021 ... Pertamina University hopes to become a special purpose vehicle in the process of shaping competent manpower to build the nation," Wianda Pusponegoro, Pertamina vice president of corporate communication, said.
