Noble Plans to Stack GOM Rig; Lay Off 100-120 Workers

Noble Drilling plans to stack its Noble Danny Adkins (UDW semisub), which will result in the layoffs of 100 to 120 employees.

In a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission, Noble said its anticipated closing of the Noble Danny Adkins, a rig located in the international waters of the Gulf of Mexico, will affect approximately 100 to 120 employees. All affected employees report to Noble’s offices in Sugar Land, Texas. The layoffs are expected to take two weeks, beginning March 14.

The letter states Noble plans on maintaining some employees at the Noble Danny Adkins stacking location and although the company may recall some employees to work if it secures a new contract for the rig, the layoffs are expected to be permanent.

Noble filed the letter with the TWC “to give as much notice as possible to potentially impacted crew members,” John Breed, director for investor relations and corporate communication for Noble Drilling, said in an email to Rigzone.

While Breed said he couldn’t speculate on crew possibilities beyond what the company knows today – which is that the rig may stack for some period of time – Noble continues to actively market the rig.

Noble announced plans to stack its Jim Day rig Nov. 30, also located in the Gulf of Mexico, and layoffs of 120 to 130 workers.
