WellAware and Ingenu will work jointly to expand the Machine Network, a purpose-built network that supports machine to machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications and powered by Ingenu’s Random Phase Multiple Access (RPMA) communications technology.
This technology was developed for San Antonio, Texas-based WellAware by Ingenu, formerly known as On-Ramp Wireless. On-Ramp Wireless rebranded as Ingenu this fall, with a focus on building public machine networks globally. It made sense for Ingenu to turn to key partners for whom it had built private networks, including WellAware, John Horn, CEO of Ingenu, told Rigzone.
The partnership is a win-win for both companies, Horn told Rigzone, giving Ingenu access to WellAware’s already constructed 55,000 square miles of coverage, and giving WellAware more access to its footprint as well. That way, the companies don’t have to duplicate efforts in building networks in the same area.
RPMA’s scalable architecture means that a number of IoT and M2M devices can be added without the need for further network investment, spurring new application opportunities in the coverage area, Ingenu said in a Jan. 6 press release.
The expanded network will cover the greater Texas geographic area, and other states that comprise around 50 percent of total U.S. production, including Texas, Oklahoma, and parts of Alaska and the Dakotas, Horn said. These are areas that have limited cellular phone coverage, so it fits perfectly into the companies’ strategy of having ubiquitous network for machines everywhere.
RPMA was designed by the founders Ingenu – who originally came from QualComm – who sought to make hand-held communication devices faster, better and more efficient. The needs of human users run counterintuitive to machine needs, which include stability, long-term network coverage, low-cost and long battery life, said Horn. It’s the first technology build specifically from ground up for machine communications.
“It’s very unique and protected, which allows us to have something very different in the marketplace and create a value proposition where nobody else has,” Horn commented.
Ingenu has built 38 networks on five continents, including major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and San Diego, while Wellaware’s network is in remote areas. The companies plan to expand this network in 2016, expanding to over 30 metropolitan areas in the United States, and licensing networks in countries worldwide, said Horn. The company will make announcements regarding these licenses at the end of next month.
