NOV, Lone Star College Partner to Provide Training for 271 Workers

National Oilwell Varco (NOV) and Lone Star College have partnered to help develop and train more workers in Texas. Using a grant from the Skills Development Fund, a job-training program funded by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), job training will be provided for 271 new and incumbent workers in the Workforce Solutions Gulf Coast area.

Houston-based NOV, an oilfield equipment supplier, will use the grant to create or upgrade 271 jobs by providing specialized training at multiple company locations. The trainees will include assemblers, fabricators, inspectors, machinists, material handlers and safety technicians.

“Skills grants deliver customized training solutions that help Texas employers and workers succeed in the marketplace,” TWC chairman Andres Alcantar said in a written release. “This investment builds not only employee skills, but the capabilities of our community colleges to the benefit of employers and the community.”

NOV announced in November that it would be “consolidating its support facility in San Angelo into other existing manufacturing facilities,” resulting in the termination of 120 employees. The layoffs are expected to be completed by Jan. 29, 2016.
