A team of students from the University of Manchester in the UK has reached the top 10 of MOL Group’s global oil and gas student competition, UPPP.
The team, which entered the competition under the name OilPath, consists of three members, Dimitrios Mouselemidis (28), Ricky Chiu (26) and Dwiputra Ramdani (24), all of whom are studying Petroleum Geoscience. OilPath will now progress to the UPPP live final in Budapest in early December, where the top five teams will develop presentations relating to the oil and gas industry to compete for a EUR25,000 ($26,476) prize pot. The other five teams will have the opportunity to talk to MOL managers and could be chosen to work with MOL Group.
Following their achievement, OilPath said:
“We enjoyed working as a team and the satisfaction that we made it to the final.
“We found out about the competition from an advert online on Facebook and from some of our classmates who registered and encouraged us to participate too. We thought it would be fun to get involved in an international challenge and play against teams participating from all over the world. The competition was also a testing ground for the knowledge we have accumulated.”
When asked if the oil and gas industry was doing enough to nurture and attract student talent, OilPath stated:
“We hope there can be more public engagement in the future for the industry. As the fossil energy business has often been deemed as a polluting industry, this may act as a mental barrier for talented students to join. Education could raise both public increase in the sector and awareness on bad business practices. For us these are crucial elements that oil and gas companies need to address in order to co-exist with modern society.”
