NGI, UT-Austin Sign Agreement on Geotechnical Engineering Cooperation

The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and the University of Texas (UT) at Austin have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further and reinforce their cooperation in the field of geotechnical engineering.

The two organizations decided to establish an MoU to establish a framework for the cooperation in joint investigations, international projects, scientific exchanges, the training of geotechnical engineering field workers and areas of mutual interest. The current MoU and future MoUs between the groups are intended to fill the gap between industry and academics, Alireza Mirdamadi, geotechnical engineer with NGI, told Rigzone.

Cooperation under this MoU may include:

  • Shared participation in Research and Development projects
  • Joint research publications
  • Exchange of researchers for study, research and advisory services
  • Access to experimental facilities
  • Slope instrumentations, slope stability monitoring and Early Warning Systems
  • Offshore geotechnics, including novel foundation solutions, advanced in situ tests and advanced laboratory testing
  • Marine geology and offshore geohazards
  • Joint supervision of graduate students

The MoU is the first one between NGI and UT-Austin, and will be in effect for a five-year period. Cooperation under the MoU is subject to and dependent upon the availability of funds and resources from each participant, said Mirdamadi.

This may include:

  • Exchange visits of individual scientists and students
  • Joint effort in research-oriented geo-scientific investigations
  • Development of contacts (both nationally and internationally) in the industrial sectors and academia
  • Collaboration on individual research problems of mutual interest, and the study of techniques and methods
  • Other forms of cooperation as may be mutually agreed upon by the participants
