Aibel Secures Johan Sverdrup Power Supply Contract

Statoil announced Thursday that it has awarded Aibel a contract for the construction of a converter station at Haugsneset and required construction site work for land-based power supply to the Johan Sverdrup field.

The engineering, procurement and construction contract covers engineering, procurement and construction site work, as well as the building of a converter station and the installation of converter equipment. The contract also includes trenching and laying of two sets of 300kV alternating-current cables from Kårstø to Haugsneset for phase 1 and phase 2 of the field development.

Valued at around NOK 600 million ($74.4 million), this is not the first contract Aibel has won in connection to Johan Sverdrup. The company's last award was for the construction of the deck for the drilling platform on the field. The latest contract is the last of the three major contracts covering the land-based power supply project. The first contract was awarded to ABB in Norway for the delivery of high-voltage direct current converter equipment for the riser platform at the field centre and for Haugsneset and the second was awarded to ABB AB in Sweden for the fabrication and installation of two 124-mile-long high-voltage cables from Haugsneset to the Johan Sverdrup field.

The Johan Sverdrup oil field will be operated by land-based power from its production start, which is scheduled for late-2019. Statoil is the operator of the Johan Sverdrup project with a 40.0267 percent interest. Lundin Norway holds a 22.6 percent interest, Petoro holds a 17.36 percent interest, Det norske oljeselskap holds an 11.5733 percent interest and Maersk Oil holds the remaining 8.44 percent interest.
