CEA, CEEF to Host 5th Annual Energy Day Festival in Houston

With the school year underway and the American workforce still lacking the skills it needs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) and Consumer Energy Education Foundation (CEEF) will host the 5th Annual Energy Day Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sam Houston Park, 1000 Bagby St., in downtown Houston.

Fast becoming one of Houston’s premiere family festivals, Energy Day will show tens of thousands of visitors the exciting and vital state-of-the-art technologies, machines, and skills needed to power the Energy Revolution. With Houston – the world’s “Energy Capital” – leading the way, wind, solar, oil, gas, and nuclear power are creating long term opportunities for American families and communities, improving American competitiveness and security, lowering energy costs for millions of consumers, and creating opportunities for our children’s future.

“Thanks to significant public and private sector investment in research and development, fossil fuels and renewables energies are more efficient, accessible, and established than ever before, diversifying our fuel supply and lessening our dependence on overseas energy,” CEA President David Holt says. “But it’s important to remember that these advancements came from our ability to transform an idea in a lab to a commercial-scale source of energy. Energy Day connects kids of all ages with the classroom tools and real-world examples needed to succeed in energy careers. There is also no better way to celebrate and recognize Houston’s critical role as the “Energy Capital.”

Energy Day provides free fun for the whole family, featuring live music, food, games, contests, and more than 70 interactive exhibits and demonstrations from leading Houston companies, such as ConocoPhillips, Caterpillar, Anadarko, Freedom Solar, Hess, Phillips 66, Golden Pass, Torch Energy, Total, Think Energy, University of Houston, Just Energy, and more. The exhibits are designed to spark students’ interest in STEM-related studies. Energy Day is particularly valuable for K-12 students and their families as it highlights on-going advancements in energy and teaches festivalgoers about the various high-tech careers throughout the industry.

As part of Energy Day’s educational mission, CEEF and CEA partner with more than 25 Houston-area academic groups to host the year-round Energy Day Academic Program (EDAP). EDAP 2015 consists of a series of nine unique, citywide, energy-related competitions aimed to motivate, challenge, and inspire K-12 students to seek careers in science and technology. Since the program began in 2011, CEEF and CEA have provided almost $60,000 in financial awards to over 300 K-12 students and teachers. This year, 123 students and teachers will receive more than $15,000 in awards at Energy Day 2015.
