Tribunal Rejects Ivory Coast Request that Ten Project be Suspended

A request by Côte d'Ivoire that Ghana be ordered to suspend all oil exploration and exploitation in the disputed zone of the West African TEN Project was rejected at the weekend by the Special Chamber of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg, Germany.

ITLOS ordered that a number of provisional measures that both Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire are required to comply with, including continued cooperation until ITLOS delivers its decision on the maritime boundary dispute (expected late 2017).

Commenting on Saturday's ruling by ITLOS, Africa-focused independent producer Tullow Oil said that development work by it on the TEN Project, offshore Ghana, is continuing. The firm said that the project is now more than 55-percent complete, with all 10 of the wells that are expected to be on stream when first oil is produced having been already drilled. Tullow added that the project remains within budget and on schedule for first oil in mid-2016.

Tullow added that its Jubilee field, also offshore Ghana, is completed unaffected by the arbitration.
