VIENNA, Dec 2 (Reuters) – Austria thinks the South Stream Russian gas pipeline project is dead but needs to get more details and official confirmation, Economy Minister Reinhold Mitterlehner told reporters on Tuesday, playing down the potential impact on Austria.
"In the end we believe this is a matter that still needs to be clarified. I assume that is has really been stopped," he said after a cabinet meeting, noting the government had seen only media reports that Russia had halted the project.
"Gas supplies are not affected by this because this was a future project that would have shown its impact only in several years," he said. Energy group OMV had agreed with Russia's Gazprom this year to extend the pipeline to Austria.
