Workers Rescued After Fire Breaks Out on Cook Inlet Platform
The U.S. Coast Guard safely evacuated four people from a Cook Inlet natural gas drilling platform after a fire broke out Thursday.
Hilcorp owns the platform, which is located in the center of the upper Cook Inlet Bay approximately 7 miles from shore, a Coast Guard spokesperson told Rigzone. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
The Coast Guard sent Hercules HC-130 and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews to conduct an overflight of the Baker platform near Nikiski. The Coast Guard also launched the Coast Guard cutter Mustang and diverted the Coast Guard cutter SPAR to the site. A 5-mile-no-fly safety zone at 5,000 feet and a 2-mile safety zone were also established around the platform.
“Our goal is to mitigate any potential risk to the environment,” said Commander Shane Montoya, the Coast Guard Federal On-Scene Coordinator and acting Coast Guard Sector Anchorage commander. “We will work closely with all parties involved to establish a unified command.”
