US EPA Studies Whether To Regulate Methane From Oil And Gas

That study was the latest to find that the EPA has severely underestimated the greenhouse gas impact of the U.S. oil and gas industry, which is in the midst of a major boom.

"Over the next few months there will be more information that is going to come in, but they will all point to need to regulate methane from this industry," said Conrad Schneider, advocacy director of the Clean Air Task Force, a nonprofit group focused on climate change.

Added Peter Zalzal, staff attorney for the Environmental Defense Fund, "Recent economic assessments point out that there are readily available, cost-effective technologies to minimize methane emissions today, and leading states have already deployed many of these important solutions."

Reviewers will have until June 16 to submit comments.

If the agency deems more regulations are needed, they will be completed before President Barack Obama leaves the White House, Dan Utech, Obama's top energy and climate aide, told reporters in March.
