It is no secret that energy companies are facing a hurdle in attracting and training a large number of employees to offset the large numbers of experienced employees who are or will soon be ready to retire. This “Great Crew Change,” as it is often called, is a common topic of discussion among hiring authorities in the energy industry, and has the potential to slow growth in the industry if not managed correctly.
A number of presentations and panel discussions centered around this topic will be held at the upcoming Upstart 360 Spring Summit event April 8 and 9 at the Lone Star College University Park Conference Center in Houston.
The topics cover real-world issues, such as hiring, recognizing and growing leaders, said Melissa Squyres, human resources director for China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) USA, adding that CNPC is currently going through a process of hiring and identifying leaders.
“Sometimes the cream rises to the top, and it’s really easy to spot those folks who have a lot of potential. But sometimes, our best leaders are rather introverted on the outside, so you really have to dig to find out just exactly who has high potential and who doesn’t,” Squyres told Rigzone. “We really spend a lot of time thinking about how to best position people and how to best identify” the leaders, she said, adding that the company is currently in the process of hiring a large number of people.
The event, which is called New Strategies & Solutions in the Global War for Talent, features a panel keynote presentation “Oracle Operation Cloud Cover: The Race to Hire, Train and Retain 1,000 Workers in Less Than One Year” and “Generations Today: New Rules Need New Tools”.
The line-up following the keynote speeches will include panel and roundtable discussions on hiring, identifying and developing leaders, the newest recruiting solutions, the collaboration of education and industry and working with a multigenerational workforce.
