Oxford University Team Wins BP Field Trip Competition

A team from Oxford University won the UK version of the Ultimate Field Trip competition at an event held in London Monday evening.

The 2014 competition, held by BP, saw teams from Strathclyde University, Birmingham University and Durham University battle it out with Oxford out in front of an audience at the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

The teams were set a challenge to identify an innovative solution to significantly reduce energy consumption within the energy industry that could be implemented by 2025 and would be scalable across the industry.

The winning team – called 'I Challenge You to a Joule' – proposed a system that would see energy from gas flares at oil and gas wells used for aluminum electrolysis. The concept uses a modular and mobile system that could be deployed in areas of the world where both oil and gas and aluminum production currently occurs, such as Texas and Russia.

The Oxford team's prize is a fortnight's field trip, due to begin in June, with BP. They will join winning teams from BP's Angola, Canada, Trinidad & Tobago and US versions of the UFT competition to visit BP's Alaskan operations. They will then visit Chicagoland in the US Midwest to see a BP trading floor and explore a state-of-the-art oil refinery.

Christopher Clay, a member of the winning team, commented: "It's just amazing to win this year's Ultimate Field Trip, it's such an achievement. I am really proud of our team's efforts. I would not hesitate in recommending the experience to other students, it's very rewarding. It's not easy, but all the hard work is worth it."

BP Head of Graduate Resourcing UK added:

"It has been another terrific year for the Ultimate Field Trip. 2014 saw the addition of two further countries, Angola and Canada, as the UFT competition expanded to cover five locations around the world. Tonight's winners will join UFT winners from the US, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and Angola to take part in a really exciting two week field trip to Alaska and Chicago."
