TAQA Worker Dies after Falling from UK North Sea Platform

The UK arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Corporation confirmed Thursday that it has suffered a fatality on the Harding platform in the UK North Sea.

TAQA Bratani said that one of its employees fell overboard during a maintenance operation on the platform early Thursday morning (2:17 a.m. UK time). He died despite being recovered from the sea by a support vessel before being transferred to Gilbert Bain Hospital in the Shetland Islands by helicopter, the firm said.

TAQA said the employee's next of kin has been informed and that the firm's "thoughts are with the family and friends of our colleague at this extremely sad time". TAQA added that it is providing its fullest support to all those involved in the incident.

The firm added that all other 108 people on board the Harding platform have been accounted for and are safe. Meanwhile, it is liaising with Police Scotland and other relevant authorities to investigate fully the incident.

Robert Paterson, director of health, safety and employment issues at trade body Oil & Gas UK issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying:

"We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of this distressing incident and our immediate thoughts go to the family, friends and colleagues of this member of our industry."

The Harding platform is located some 200 miles northeast of Aberdeen.

Reuters reported earlier on Thursday that the 12,000 barrel-per-day platform was shut down after the incident, quoting a TAQA spokesman who said: "It is what we feel is the appropriate response to the tragic loss of life and the effect it has had on our colleagues on the platform."
