Flow of Natural Gas Stopped in A-7 Well, Vermilion Block 356 in GOM

The flow of natural gas from the A-7 well, in Vermilion Block 356, has stopped, confirmed the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). The operator pumped weighted drilling fluids into the well and monitored it overnight to ensure that the flow did not resume.

Flow from the well stopped at 7 p.m. Jan. 31, Jonathan Garrett, chief operating officer of EnVen Energy, told Rigzone.

Additional work is required to secure the well, including setting barriers to ensure that natural gas is not released, BSEE stated in a press release.

Last Thursday, personnel from a rig and a platform, operating in the Gulf of Mexico, were evacuated due to the loss of well control, according to BSEE.

The Rowan Louisiana (350’ ILS) jackup was operating in Vermillion Block 356, about 108 miles southwest of Lafayette, and drilling in 256 feet of water. Operator of the block is EnVen Energy Ventures, LLC, an oil and gas exploration and development services company. EnVen is a subsidiary of Palm Energy Partners, LLC.

The adjacent platform, ‘A’, was producing oil and gas and was shut-in.

“Human safety and protection of the environment are our top priorities,” Garrett said to Rigzone. "EnVen, BSEE, the Coast Guard and Rowan personnel pulled together as a team to respond safely, quickly and effectively."

BSEE will continue to investigate the incident, the organization said in a released statement Feb. 1.
