Total Shuts Down Operations At Yemen Oil Field

Reuters

PARIS, Jan 30 (Reuters) - French oil major Total said on Thursday it had to shut down operations at Yemen's Block 10 oil field due to strike action called on Jan. 28 by the local Block 10 Labor Union.

"Due to the strike, the company had no option but to unfortunately shutdown the operations to ensure the safety of all personnel and facilities," Total said in a statement.

Total requested to maintain minimum operations in order to ensure enough supply of gas to the power plant operated by the Public Electricity Corporation (PEC) which provides electricity for peoplein Hadramout, eastern Yemen, the statement added.

Yemen accounted for about 2.8 percent of Total's global oil and gas production in 2012.

Security in Yemen is closely watched by Western and neighbouring Gulf countries because of its proximity to top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and the presence there of an al Qaeda branch that has plotted bomb attacks against international airlines.
