Algeria's state oil and gas company Sonatrach has made a new gas discovery in the Timimoun basin, in the southwest of the country, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' official news agency, Opecna, reported Tuesday.

The exploration well was in the area of Hassi Mouina and was the first drilling activity in the region, Sonatrach said.

Initial tests produced a flow rate of about 170,000 cubic meters of gas a day.

The find is the fourth made this year by Sonatrach.

The company is set to re-launch exploration activities in this region, which is considered under-explored, compared with the southeastern areas of the country, Sonotrach added.
