Eni Fires up New Supercomputer

change text size

Italian oil major Eni has switched on its new PetaFLOP-class supercomputer at its Green Data Center in Ferrera Erbognone in northern Italy.

The supercomputer – which consists of 1,500 dual CPU nodes and 1,300 general-purpose graphics processing units – will have a computing capacity of three petaFLOPS, meaning that can perform more than three million, billion simply calculations (or floating-point operations) per second.

The computer will support Eni's hydrocarbon exploration activities by providing the computing capability it needs to improve the accuracy and resolutions of its geophysical and geological studies. Specifically it will support the execution of Eni's suite of 3D seismic imaging packages as well as advanced petroleum system modeling algorithms.

The company's announcement of its new supercomputer comes just a month after BP fired up its new 2.2-petaFLOP supercomputer at its Center for High-Performance Computing in Houston. In March this year, French oil major Total inaugurated its Pangea supercomputer, which processes data at a rate of 2.3 petaFLOPs.
