Southeast Asia LNG Demand to Reach 40 Mtpa by 2025

Southeast Asia is expected to import around 40 million tons per annum (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2025, accounting for 13 percent of total demand in the Asia Pacific, Qatargas CEO Sheik Khalid bin Khalifa al-Thani said at the Singapore International Energy Week Monday.

"Just three years ago, Southeast Asia never imported LNG," Khalid said, attributing the demand for LNG to economic growth, supply diversification and cleaner energy.

Qatargas supply its first LNG cargo to Thailand - the company's first to Southeast Asia - in 2011. Indonesia came next in 2012, while Singapore and Malaysia followed this year.

Qatargas also plans to open a Southeast Asia representative office in Bangkok, Thailand, Khalid added.

The company, majority owned by Qatar's national oil company Qatar Petroleum, also has offices in China and Japan.
