Women Who Shine: Q&A with Apache's Jo Clem

As a working mom of three, I wanted to follow the role model that my mom set for me and my siblings.

While she held a number of different jobs, she always made sure we knew jobs would come and go, but we, her children, were a lifetime commitment. Somehow she made the costumes for the school plays… (I was a fairy godmother in first grade….) baked cookies by the dozens and was always there to listen, laugh, and cry with us. I finally realized she also had another job. I had no idea, until I had children of my own, what stamina and focus that took.

So … as a mother, it was a challenge for sure but I was motivated both by her legacy and the joy of sharing the quality (if not always the quantity) of time I invested in trying to be first and foremost the best Mom I could be, and also committed to execute and deliver results in whatever position/title I held.

As I look at my children now, I know without a doubt both she and I made the right choices. Jobs come and go; children are forever.

Rigzone: Discuss your career path. How did you enter the industry and whom do you credit?

Clem: A singular mentor in my career was an oil and gas executive who saw the importance of learning and development in the workplace long before his peers. He invited me to transfer my skills of instructing and encouraging others into a consulting, and then a corporate setting.

As do many mentors, he grew me in that job … sometimes requesting, sometimes demanding but always inspiring me to do more. Because of him, I did things I never thought I could or would do and found my work more fulfilling day-by-day. I owe him a debt of gratitude and seek to repay it by mentoring others in whom I see exciting potential for greatness.

Very inspirational to every person and to all the women in the Oil & Gas Industry. A mother first then the business woman and she has balanced them both very well. We as women need to always remember to take each opportunity step by step and not be afraid that its a mans only Industry, yes its hard to get into the Oil &Gas Business but once you do it just gets in our blood. Im so very proud of the Oil & Gas Industries in the United States of AMERICA!
