El Merk, MLE Fields to Put Algeria on Track Again

Current Situation

Resposibility for the development and exploitation of these fields belongs to three associations, namely Sonatrach/Anadarko, Sonatrach/Eni and Sonatrach/Burlington. In order to conduct the development and exploitation operations of the fields as efficiently as possible, the parties to the associations have agreed to carry them out jointly. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to this effect was executed in July 2005 by Sonatrach, Anadarko, Burlington, Eni, Maersk, Talisman and Teikoku.

The facilities comprise a Central Processing Facilities (CPF) processing hydrocarbons, offsites fluid gathering and gas/water injection systems, Oil – Condensate – LPG, infrastructure for both the construction and operating phases of the facility(i.e., roads, airfield, waste disposal sites, living accommodation, administration, warehousing, maintenance workshops and storage facilities).

According to sources close to the project, the major production units operate as scheduled. This includes the 02 trains (OT1 & OT2) for the production of oil and gasoline, which are currently operational.

“Currently we are working on starting up the LPG unit and export natural gas unit,” a source said. “They should be onstream by year end,” he added.

MLE … Another Success Story

In addition to the startup of the El Merk project, Italian energy company Eni and Sonatrach have jointly started gas production at the Menzel Ledjmet East field (MLE).

A plant, located almost 621 miles (1,000 kilometers) from Algiers in Block 405b, will allow for the treatment of rich gas for daily production and the sale of 9 million cubic meters of gas, 15,000 barrels of oil and condensate and 12,000 barrels of LPG.

With the start of production at the MLE field and other projects, Eni is expected to achieve  daily production of 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent in 2013.

Good analysis. After all the downs the country went through, the future seems to be brighter. God Bless Algeria.
