Statoil Makes Small Oil Discovery in Norwegian Sea

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate reported Wednesday that Statoil Petroleum has made an oil discovery near the Norne field in the Norwegian Sea.

Statoil is in the process of completing the drilling of wildcat well 6608/10-15, which is located around five miles northeast of the Norne field on production license 128.

The primary exploration target of the well was to prove petroleum in Early Jurassic reservoir rocks. The secondary target was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic rocks. The NPD said that Statoil found two oil columns of approximately 140 feet each in both locations.

Preliminary calculations of the size of the discovery are between six and 19 million barrels of oil.

The well was drilled by the Songa Trym (mid-water semisub) rig, which will now proceed to production license 348 in the Norwegian Sea to drill wildcat well 6407/8-6, where Statoil is also the operator.
