Oilfield services firm Subsea 7 reported Wednesday that it will spend $8.6 million on refurbishing its Caithness, Scotland-based pipeline bundle fabrication site.
The fabrication site, located six miles north of Wick, Caithness, was established in 1978, but the firm said the increasing success of its Bundle technology has meant the facility needs an upgrade.
"Subsea 7 is experiencing its busiest-ever period for bundle design/installation with eight bundles installed in 2011/12, and a further eight installations confirmed for the period to Q2 2015. The company's significant investment in equipment and facilities will support the high activity we are now experiencing as a consequence of embracing the benefits of bundle technology for rejuvenating and extending existing facilities or new developments," Willie Watt, Subsea 7 General Manager for the Caithness facility, said in a statement.
The news comes a day after Subsea 7 presented a technical paper called "Bundle Technology for the Future" at this year’s Offshore Europe conference in Aberdeen, Scotland.
The paper, presented by Subsea 7 Bundles Design Manager Martin Goodlad, discussed the benefits of bundle technology for rejuvenating and extending existing facilities or new developments. It also provided details about the technical benefits of bundles, such as design and construction methods that enable fast hook-up and commissioning offshore.
Subsea 7's paper also detailed its five-year bundle development initiative that aims to advance Bundle technology for high-pressure/high-temperature applications and deep-water projects.
Subsea 7 added Wednesday that the refurbishment of its Caithness bundle fabrication facility is expected to be completed in 2014, with the 130 people currently employed at the site set to increase to more than 150.
