Ultimate Field Trip Goes International
"For myself and the other two students from the University of Illinois, as chemical engineers we knew a lot about the downstream part of the business but we didn't know all that much about upstream before coming here," Connolly said. "So we were able to see just what happens from leasing to drilling to production and all the resources that goes into that, and the massive amount of technology that's utilized to help drill in the kinds of places that BP does."
Weekes was equally enthused.
"Being able to go on this Ultimate Field Trip made us realize the massive scale of operations that occur and how much technology and infrastructure investing to secure energy resources for the rest of the world.
"And we really got to see some of the cutting edge technology that is used to help facilitate this, such as the remotely-operated vehicles and the seismology surveying and the flexible tubes that they use to drill in different directions. So, really seeing the different types of technology was something we took away from the trip."
So are the students considering a career in oil and gas?
"I'm not sure yet. I still have two more years at university before I enter the workforce," Connolly said. "But I can say that learning more about upstream and the petroleum industry in general from this trip has helped to pique my interest in the industry. It's not that I wasn't interested before but just getting more experience, talking to more people has really helped me to understand and get me more interested in this business."
