UK Regulator to Require New Permits for Onshore Oil Drillers

Musings: Latest Economic Statistics Are Not Good for Energy Market

The U.K.'s environmental regulator is set to require oil companies planning to drill onshore to apply for permits for mining waste and flaring, the Daily Telegraph reports Wednesday, without citing any sources.

The move by the Environmental Agency will extend rules already applied to shale gas fracking firms to companies planning to drill conventional wells onshore in the U.K. It follows a challenge by Friends of the Earth against a conventional well Cuadrilla plans to drill in Balcombe, West Sussex. The campaign group argued that under European regulations, the company required permits even though it has said it has no plans to frack in Balcomber, the paper says.

The EA did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Nonsensical and arbitrary EU regulations will kill the UK onshore oil & gas industry at the very cusp of its greatest opportunity for growth in decades. Unfortunately EU regulations are binding and there is nothing that Westminster can do about it. The sooner the UK leaves the EU and becomes once again a free and independent nation, the sooner it can unleash the growth and opportunities that await.
