Kidnapped British Worker Freed in Indonesia

A UK worker abducted while working for Medco Energi in Indonesia was released Thursday, Medco reported.

Malcolm Primose, 61, was released from captivity near the Alur Kol Village, Rantau Selamat District in East Aceh and has been safely returned to the family. Primrose was abducted June 11 from near the Matang-1 exploration well. Drilling operations at the site had been completed and the rig was being moved from the site.

Primrose is an employee of PT Blad Energy Indonesia, the contractor for the PT Medco E&P Indonesia Block A production sharing contract. Primrose has worked for several oil and gas companies in the Aceh region as a drilling expert since 1981, including GeoEnpro, PetroChina, Lundin Russia and Lundin Indonesia.

PT Medco E&P Indonesia hopes for the security in East Aceh, particularly in the operating area, will soon return to normal "in order to maintain confidence in a good investment climate," the company said in a June 13 statement.

Sky News reported that the kidnappers had contacted Primrose's family demanding a $500,000 (GBP 318,000) ransom, but decided to release him after a massive manhunt for Primrose was launched.  The kidnapper's identity and motive was not immediately clear.
