Eni to Restart Libya Gas Exports after Militant Clashes

ROME - Eni SpA is in the process of restarting Libyan natural gas exports to Italy after a suspension Saturday, an official at Italy's biggest energy company said Monday.

"I believe we are heading to a solution to what happened Saturday," said Leonardo Bellodi, Eni executive vice president of government affairs, at an energy conference in Rome.

Eni was informed late Sunday that problems relating to clashes between Libyan militants near a hydrocarbon site in the North African country, which had led it to suspend gas exports, had been resolved, said Mr. Bellodi.

He also said that it appears the Libyan army will be allowed into the area to protect the site.

Libya exports about 8 billion cubic meters of gas a year to Italy, or about 10% of the country's needs, via the undersea Greenstream pipeline.

The pipeline can begin exporting 24 hours to 36 hours after output restarts, said Mr. Bellodi.

It was unfortunate incident and it shouldn’t even happened, but Libya is in a difficult and transitional period that I believe will be over, it is just a matter of time. I hope the Libyan government will be more active in the security issue and avoid any more surprises.
