ConocoPhillips and Karoon Gas disclosed Thursday that drilling at the Zephyros-1 exploration well in the Greater Poseidon area has resumed, following blowout preventer repair works that were successfully carried out on the Transocean Legend.
Karoon Gas confirmed in a statement that mechanical repairs and maintenance works at the rig's blowout preventer have been completed, and that both the blowout preventer and the marine riser have been re-run to the seafloor.
Since the middle of last year, the JV has been grappling with a spate of blowout preventer problems on the Transocean Legend.
ConocoPhillips and Karoon Gas had initially encountered a problem with the rig's blowout preventer when it was drilling on the JV's first exploration well – Boreas-1 – which was spudded in May 2012. Shortly after, the Transocean Legend experienced a mechanical failure with its blowout preventer. Drilling works on Boreas-1 was subsequently halted for more than two months to allow repair works to take place. The JV only managed to resume drilling at Boreas-1 in mid-August last year.
In December 2012, drilling at the Zephyros-1 exploration well was unexpectedly halted due to a reoccurrence of a blowout preventer problem. Zephyros-1 is the JV's second well to be drilled in its Greater Poseidon five-well exploration program.
The JV confirmed in December last year that the project timeline of its five-well exploration program in the area will be pushed back due to the Transocean Legend’s persistent blowout preventer problems.
A spokesperson representing Karoon Gas told Rigzone in December that the JV was disappointed with the performance of the rig. The spokesperson added that the project's delay affected workers on board the rig as it meant that the crew would have to be out at sea for a longer period of time.
The five wells that the JV have scheduled for drilling lie in the WA-314-P, WA-315-P and WA-398-P Browse Basin permits, offshore Western Australia, containing the previously announced Poseidon and Kronos gas discoveries. Karoon Gas holds a 40 percent stake in WA-315-P and WA-398-P, and a 90 percent stake in WA-314-P. ConocoPhillips, the operator, holds the remaining stakes in the three permits.
