UPDATE: No Visible Sheen from Kulluk

An overflight by the United States Coast Guard detected no visible sheen from the Kulluk drill barge, Unified Command reported early Tuesday. The rig grounded the night before on the southeast shoreline of Sitkalidak Island, which is located near Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska.

At approximately 9 a.m. Alaska time Tuesday, Unified Command stated that the condition of the Noble Drilling rig had not been confirmed. The Coast Guard completed an initial nighttime overflight Monday and additional assessments were planned Tuesday. Collaborators in the response effort -- the Coast Guard, Shell Alaska, Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and Noble -- reported that severe weather conditions continue to hamper response operations.
