MEO Australia disclosed Thursday that it has called an early total depth (TD) at the Sainampueng-1 exploration well, in the Gulf of Thailand, due to "drilling problems".

In a statement issued, MEO Australia said that the well was drilled from 2,237 meters measured depth below the rotary table (mMDRT) to 2,323 mMDRT when it "suffered a significant loss of mud circulation".

"The well has been stabilized, wireline logs have been acquired and operations to plug and abandon the well have commenced," MEO Australia's Managing Director Jürgen Hendrich said in the statement.

"Sainampueng-1 penetrated the upper most objective interval, but interpretation of logs recorded while drilling [did] not confirm a reservoir at this depth. The deeper intervals of Sainampueng have not been drilled and remain prospective," Hendrich added.

Sainampueng-1 sits on the G2/48 exploration concession, which extends across 3,648 square miles (9,449 square kilometres). It is central to an emerging oil province in the Rayong Basin, near to the producing Jasmine oil field.

MEO Australia, alongside with its partner Mubadala Petroleum, confirmed that the JV will proceed to undertake an evaluation of Sainampueng-1 – which includes the study of a 197 foot (60 meter) thick shale section – to determine the prospectivity of the basin.
