Sweden's Lundin Petroleum announced Tuesday that drilling has started on appraisal well 16/2-16 on the Johan Sverdrup discovery in production license 501 in the Norwegian North Sea.

The well is located on the northeastern flank of the discovery with the objective to establish the depth, quality and thickness of the Jurassic reservoir sequences that are approximately 1.8 miles away from wells 16/2-13A and 16/2-10 that are located in the PL501 and PL265 licenses respectively. Both these wells found excellent reservoirs and deeper oil-water contacts than seen elsewhere at the Johan Sverdrup discovery, according to Lundin.

Well 16/2-16 will investigate reservoir quality and the oil water contact between the 16/2-13A and 16/2-10 wells. A limited oil column is expected due to the well's location on the flank of the Johan Sverdrup discovery. The well will however provide valuable information on depth conversion at this location as well as a better understanding of aquifer support.

The planned total depth is approximately 7,375 feet below mean sea level and the well will be drilled by using the drilling rig Transocean Winner (mid-water semisub). The drilling operation is expected to take approximately 50 days.

Lundin Petroleum is the operator of PL501 with a 40-percent interest. Partners are Statoil Petroleum with 40 percent and Mærsk Oil Norway with 20 percent.
