EU Opts for Offshore Safety Directive

The European Parliamentary energy committee voted Tuesday for a less onerous interpretation of its rules for offshore oil and gas safety.

The vote for offshore rules to be covered by a European Union 'Regulation' to a 'Directive' means that EU governments have greater flexibility in how they fit these rules into their own national law. If the rules had come under an EU regulation they would have to have been strictly adhered to by each member country.

Trade body Oil & Gas UK welcomed the result of the vote.

"The result, which comes after the Environment Committee vote for a Directive, is very encouraging. We strongly believe this is the best way to achieve the European Commission's objective of raising offshore safety standards across the EU, to the high levels already present in the North Sea. A Regulation would do exactly the opposite and weaken the UK's already world-class offshore health and safety regime," said Oil & Gas UK Chief Executive Malcolm Webb.
