|Thursday, July 05, 2001
Ocean Rig's first newbuild semisubmersible, Leiv Eiriksson, began sea trials on May 7, 2001 and is expected to finish testing by the end of July. To date, the rig has completed the inclination testing and numerous other technical system tests. In addition, the installation of its six thrusters are complete. The company has experienced some minor technical problems during this period, none of which are viewed as serious. Ocean Rig estimates that the anchors will be retrieved within a few days followed by the testing of the dynamic positioning systems. Ocean Rig is negotiating a drilling contract for the operations of Leiv Eiriksson. It is expected that the rig will be on contract by the time the sea trials are completed.
