Thailand Energy Minister Inks Cooperation Deal with Iran

H.E. Mr. Prommin Lertsuridej, Thailand's Minister of Energy presided over the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding for Petroleum Cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran's representative H.E. Dr. Nejad Hosseinian, Deputy Minister of Petroleum for International Affairs during an official visit.

The first MOU covers the cooperation between the two countries on Petroleum-related projects and will be signed by H.E. Prommin Lertsuridej, Thailand's Minister of Energy and H.E. Dr. Nejad Hosseinian, Deputy Minister of Petroleum for International Affairs, of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The MOU covers the following five main areas:
  • The cooperation on the Petroleum Exploration and Development between PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) and the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum
  • The cooperation to conduct the feasibility study on importing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the Islamic Republic of Iran for Thailand's domestic utilization
  • The cooperation to exchange experiences on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV) usage between Thailand and the Islamic Republic of Iran
  • The invitation to the Islamic Republic of Iran to participate in Thailand's 2 new majors projects; Thailand Petroleum Trading Center and the Strategic Energy Landbridge (SELB)
  • The cooperation in Petrochemical investment in the Islamic Republic of Iran


  • Both parties will then organize joint working group for further cooperation after the signing.

    The second MOU will be signed by Mr. Maroot Mrigadat, President of PTTEP and the Iranian Deputy Minister of Petroleum. This MOU resulted from the 6th JC Thai-Iran meeting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok, April 2002.

    This MOU covers the cooperation between the two countries in the areas of petroleum exploration, development and utilization of petroleum and their products as well as training and other technical assistance in oil and gas activities.

    H.E. Prommin Lertsuridej, the Minister of Energy said "Today marks another Thailand's milestone in the building of a strong relationship with such a petroleum-rich country like The Islamic Republic of Iran which will lead to future cooperation in petroleum-related business between our nations."

    Currently, PTTEP invests in exploration, development and production activities in Thailand and in Southeast Asian countries such as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Union of Myanmar. It also invests in the Sultanate of Oman in the Middle East and in Algeria, North Africa.
