Oil Sheen Prompts Platform Shutdown Off Malaysia
Malaysia's state-owned oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) shut down oil platforms and production pipelines offshore eastern peninsular Malaysia after a thin layer of oil was sighted in nearby waters.
The facilities, located about 240 kilometers offshore Malaysia, are operated by Petronas's production sharing contractors – upstream unit Petronas Carigali, ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia and Newfield Peninsular Malaysia.
Emergency response and oil spill teams, including those from the Petroleum Industry of Malaysia Mutual Aid Group and East Asia Response, mobilized to the area and have cleaned up most of the oil sheen. The situation is being monitored via aerial and marine surveillance while a remotely operated underwater vehicle and subsea pipeline tests are being used to identify to source of the sheen.
