New Oil, Gas Graduates Key to OMV's Recruitment Drive
Austria's leading oil and gas company, OMV, raised cheers among energy workers last July when it announced a major upstream recruitment drive. The firm said it would need to recruit 1,600 additional technical staff between 2013 and 2016 as it significantly expanded its exploration and production activities.
Since then, OMV has indeed been very busy, announcing and completing a $2.7 billion deal with Norway's Statoil ASA in order to materially enhance its upstream portfolio. The agreement saw it acquire portions of the Gullfaks and Gudrun fields, both offshore Norway, as well as boosting its share of the Rosebank and Schiehallion fields, located west of the Shetland Islands. The deal also saw OMV acquire options on 11 North Sea licenses.
Meanwhile, OMV is already very active in the Black Sea, Libya, Tunisia, Kazakhstan and Kurdistan, while it also has exploration activities going on in such far-flung places as New Zealand.
A key figure in the recruitment drive that is vital to OMV carrying out its expansion strategy is Andrea Iro, OMV's Human Resources Business Head for Exploration & Production.
After the 2013's deal with Statoil, OMV now holds around 60 North Sea licenses and Iro believes that her company can make the most out of those licenses when it comes to recruitment.
“It's an attractive portfolio in the North Sea. It is helping us to attract people to OMV and to our projects: on the one hand, to our already-producing projects; on the other hand to our exploration licenses," she said.
"This is really what people see in our involvement in the North Sea. They see OMV as being a very attractive and growing [company] in this regard. There will be lots of activity in the coming years in the North Sea."
