The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a crewmember who went missing off a work boat in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 30-miles south of the Southwest Pass.
Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received the initial report from a crewmember aboard the research vessel, Western Monarch, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, stating that a crewmember was missing after the work boat with four people aboard capsized while transferring personnel working with two WesternGeco research vessels, the Western Monarch and Western Neptune, both 295-foot seismic research vessels. Three people were immediately rescued by the Western Monarch.
The Coast Guard searched more than 800-square miles of the Gulf of Mexico with the following assets:
- Four HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopters and crews
- Two 87-foot patrol boats and crews
- A 41-foot utility boat and crew
- An HU-144A Ocean Sentry plane and crew
- An HU-25 Falcon jet and crew
