Pemex has started its own probe into the Usumacinta accident that killed 21 people.
On October 23, strong winds of 80 mph and waves up to 25 feet high caused the Usumacinta to hit the Sea Pony well. Twenty-one workers died in the subsequent evacuation.
Pemex Director General Jesus Reyes Heroles stated in a recent press conference that the company will investigate the causes of the accident and reiterated the company's condolences to the families of those who died.
The investigation has been identified as the company's first-ever independent probe and will be led by Nobel Prize laureate Mario Molina.
