Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited, a Subsidiary of Chevron, together with its partners, has made another substantial oil discovery in Block 14 offshore Angola. The discovery well, named Malange-1, is the first Cretaceous-age Pinda Reservoir discovery for the block and the 11th discovery in Block 14, overall.

Drilled in December 2006 at a water depth of 873 feet and a total vertical depth of 15,562 feet, Malange-1 found 212 net feet of oil. When tested in March 2007, the well flowed high-quality crude oil at a rate of 7,669 barrels per day. More studies, drilling and potential reservoir assessments will follow.

“This discovery is a further demonstration of how we are achieving superior success from a focused and high-impact exploration program,” said John Watson, president of Chevron International Exploration and Production.

“Chevron is pleased with the success of this well, which further underscores the continuing success in this prolific block and helps enhance the company’s already strong position in Angola and western Africa,” said Alan Kleier, managing director of Chevron’s Southern Africa Strategic Business Unit.

Located offshore Angola, Block 14 comprises 1,560 square miles. Chevron was named operator in 1995 with 31 percent interest, and drilling began in 1996. Other partners in the Block 14 contractor group are: Sonangol Pesquisa e Produacao S.A.R.L., ENI Angola Exploration B.V. and Total E&P Angola with 20 percent each; and GALP-Exploracao e Producao with 9 percent interest.
