ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc. has begun operations at its Guntong E gas platform in the South China Sea. The platform is located 130 miles off the coast of Malaysia and is the first phase of the Guntong Hub development expected to produce and process a total of more than 4 trillion cubic feet of gas for sale in Peninsular Malaysia.

Gunting E is connected to the Guntong D gas compression platform and would provide the compression needs for existing and future developments including those from the Guntong, Tabu and Tapis fields. Guntong E is going to facilitate the more conventional type of platforms that have wells. There would be no more compression platform projects at the Guntong hub but ExxonMobil said it continue to invest in new (production) platforms that would feed into the Guntong compression complex.

The Guntong Hub development will encompass the drilling of new wells, workover of existing wells, satellite platforms, new pipelines and retrofit of existing platforms. The additional compression capacity at Guntong E would also increase total crude oil production capacity from EMEPMI-operated fields by more than 10%, with a peak production rate of over 15,000 barrels per day.

EMEPMI is one of the major crude oil producers and suppliers of natural gas in Malaysia. Gross daily operated crude oil production is 150,000 barrels per day, while gross daily operated gas production is around one billion cubic feet of gas per day.

Malaysian unit ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc. and state oil firm Petronas each hold a 50 percent interest in the gas production sharing contract under which the platform was developed.
