Ithaca Awards Technip 'Substantial' North Sea Contract

change text size

North Sea-focused Ithaca Energy took a step closer to completing preparations for the development of the Stella and Harrier fields by awarding French oilfield services firm Technip a "substantial" contract to carry out all subsea engineering work in the Greater Stella Area (GSA).

The Greater Stella Area development is located on the UK Continental Shelf around 175 miles east-southeast of Aberdeen, Scotland, in a depth of approximately 300 feet.

The EPIC (engineering, procurement, installation and construction) contract is the first to be awarded to Technip by Ithaca. The work includes the detailed design and pipelay of a 20-mile, 10-inch oil export pipeline and a 38-mile, 10-inch gas export pipeline to the fields' production platform, along with various other subsea work.

Technip said in a statement that its operating center in Aberdeen will execute the contract, which is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2013. The company's managing director, Bill Morrice, commented:

"Ithaca Energy (UK) is a new client for Technip and we are delighted to have been awarded this significant contract to help them develop the GSA. The UK North Sea is still an exciting place to be, with opportunities in all areas including the Inspection, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) and West of Shetland markets. This particular award is evidence of the high level of activity around traditional developments and we look forward to supporting Ithaca Energy (UK) to bring the GSA hub onstream."

In its own statement on the contract, Mike Travis, Ithaca's manager for the Greater Stella Area, said:

"Awarding a single contract to Technip for the major subsea activities means that we benefit from a cost effective solution as well as accessing the full resources and execution expertise of a leading contractor in the field of subsea engineering and construction. This award also closes out the contracting for the third key element of the Stella and Harrier development program, given the contracts that were awarded last year for the provision of the Ensco drilling rig and the FPF-1 modification works being performed by Petrofac."
